Education Rooted in Values

Amrita Vidyalayams

Amma’s vision on education is well defined, Education for life and education for living. Right from the beginning, the Mata Amritanandamayi Math was keen to put this ideal into practice by imparting value-based education to children. The first institution to take birth out of this universal vision was the Amrita Vidyalayam primary school in Kodungallur, Kerala, in 1987. Today, the Mata Amritanandamayi Math runs 65 schools across India, from pre-primary to high schools. These institutions provide standard education through enthusiastic, activity oriented teaching methods. An integral part of this holistic approach to learning is to instill values like self-awareness, life skills, selflessness, compassion, leadership skills, and respect for others in the students.
As part of Amma’s universal vision on education, the schools regularly conduct community outreach programs, which allow the students to know the society at large and to become aware of their social responsibilities. The curriculum includes Sanskrit, Yoga and classical Indian art forms and each Amrita Vidyalayam provides 75-100 free scholarships for students coming from poor families.
