Dherubal, a village in the Koregaon district of Chhattisgarh, was in need of electrification owing to the non-affordability of the existing rural electrification schemes. It was necessary to provide minimal lighting service to the villagers to ensure safety, educational opportunities, and income generation. The resources available in the village were explored and finally something innovative clicked in the mind of an eleventh-grade student from Amrita Vidyalayam. As a result, an energy capturing bicycle capable of generating free and clean energy was proposed by the student. Our research team then designed a prototype bicycle with a hybrid system which integrates both cycle dynamo and a renewable energy source garnering sufficient energy for lighting a rural home.
