Amrita Hospitals successfully completes 12th hand transplant surgery

Gulnora, 45, is from Uzbekistan and underwent a double hand transplant surgery at Amrita Hospital, Kochi. She has just completed her month-long treatment there and, with happiness and gratitude, returned home. Now begin follow-up treatments, including physiotherapy, to enable her to regain full movement.

Gulnora lost her hands in an accident at her workplace. She received limbs harvested from Anita, a native of Nagercoil, who was declared brain dead at KIMS Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, on September 21, 2022. Her hands were airlifted to Kochi, and the doctors at Amrita Hospital successfully attached them to Gulnora’s in a 16-hour surgery.

This is the twelfth successful hand transplant at Amrita Hospital, Kochi. To celebrate with Gulnora, Dr Prem Nair, Group Medical Director of Amrita Hospitals; Dr Pratapan Nair, Medical Administrator; Dr Subramania Iyer, Head of the Centre for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; Dr Jimmy Mathew; Dr Anil Mathew; and Brahmacharini Rehana took part in a cake-cutting function organized at the hospital.
