Palghar Incident Heart-Breaking: Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri

A heart-breaking incident that would bring tears to the eyes of anyone with a bit of conscience took place in Palghar, Maharashtra. A 72-year-old Sannyasi, Sri Kalpavriksha Giri Maharaj; his accomplice, Susheela Giri Maharaj; and their driver, Neelesh were killed by a mob. It is truly heart-breaking that such an incident could take place in India, the birthplace of spirituality and the very concept of monasticism. Forget that he was a sannyasi. He wasn’t even afforded the basic human consideration that should be afforded to any man of 72 years. No one was willing to listen to their explanation that they were going for their guru’s funeral rituals. It’s not right to say during such times when COVID-19 is hunting down humanity that such news is irrelevant.

The report that they were mistaken as thieves when they were being attacked and murdered is not credible. Our society must determine if there was a hidden agenda behind this cruel act and apprehend the people responsible. It is the dharma of Hindus to ascertain what happened as well. Above all, the investigation must be carried out efficiently, so that the dharma of this religion, which has taught the world the mantra lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu mantra—May all beings be happy and at peace—be preserved.
